Eight Potent Jar Spells to Fuel Your Craft

1. Charm for Good Fortune

I used to think of jar spells for their pleasing look. Place one on your desk, in your vehicle, on your altar, and presto—a spot instantly becomes more enchanted. Plus, it was great to finally find a use for all those bottles I'd bought at the craft store.

These charm jars faintly reminded me of the sand art bottles I used to get at amusement parks (which I would always uncork, empty, and ruin), but beyond that, because they just sit there, I didn't give them much thought. After all, what was different about having stones or powders in a jar versus just leaving them on my altar? In my view, a spell involves many steps and time, so a small jar filled with flowers and oil wasn't going to do much.

That's when it clicked for me. A jar spell isn't just a collection of loose items; it's a contained enchantment. You can absolutely put the same effort into making a jar spell as a more classic spell, and the best part? You can carry it with you anywhere. The spell changes from something you do once, into a special item or token you can keep near for as long as you like. How wonderful is that!

Like many witches, people have asked me to do spells for them. Even the most doubtful folks eventually come around and ask me to conjure up some magic for them "just in case." While I'm happy to help, when I perform spells, I prefer to be alone. So when I tell someone, "Yep, it's done," there's no shared experience for them. They haven't been through the spell with me, so it's even harder for them to feel confident in the magic. For some, this isn't an issue. For others, they need to see with their own eyes to believe it will work.

That's where the charm jar comes in. I can still perform the spell alone, then give them this small symbol of the spell that they can keep with them. Since good fortune spells are a special skill of mine, this is the most requested charm jar and the first one I'll share today with you!

Ideally, this spell should be done on a Sunday while burning a clearing incense, like frankincense or sage.

What you will need:

  • A jar (smaller ones travel better, but size isn't key)

  • Cinnamon

  • Sugar

  • Chamomile

  • Small green crystals (like green aventurine, green calcite, or moss agate chips)

  • Small purple crystals (like amethyst, lepidolite, or charoite chips)

  • Small red or brown crystals (like red jasper, hematite, or tiger's eye chips)

  • Whole cloves (as an alternative to star anise)

  • Lemon or lime zest/oil (as an alternative to lemongrass oil)

  • A small leaf, like a bay leaf, thyme leaf, or oak leaf

  • A green candle and a safe place to work with fire

  • A sprinkle of cinnamon, basil, or ginger powder for luck-drawing

Steps:

  1. Set your intention: On your chosen leaf, write "I am fortunate" or a similar brief phrase. Since leaves can be tricky to write on, keep it short.

  2. Ignite your message: With your clearing incense burning, light the green candle. Put a tiny bit of lemon/lime zest or oil on the candle. Hold the leaf with tweezers. Carefully light the leaf from the candle's flame to send your message out. Keep the ashes, but don't blow out the candle yet!

  3. Layer your components: Start by adding the small green crystals to the jar. Then add the sugar, followed by chamomile, then the small red or brown crystals, cinnamon, small purple crystals, the whole cloves, the luck-drawing powder, and finally, the ash from the leaf.

  4. Seal with wax: Carefully add a few drops of the green candle's melted wax to the top of the layers.

  5. Secure your charm: Seal the jar tightly. Fill the jar almost to the very top so there's little room for the ingredients to shift. If you like, you can draw a special symbol or mark on the outside of the jar, but I prefer to leave them plain. Once everything is put together, blow out the candle.

2. Prosperity Container

For clear reasons, having a money container nearby is a solid idea. This charm jar, unlike my other money spells, calls for a real paper bill. Like draws like, they say, and the money in the jar will be the enticement for more money in your life!

What you will need:

  • Small gold-colored stones (like pyrite, citrine, or clear quartz chips)

  • A green candle

  • Honey (or maple syrup, or agave nectar)

  • A paper bill (any amount)

  • A pinch of cinnamon, basil, or dried parsley (for drawing money)

Steps:

  1. Prepare your space: On a Thursday, light your green candle.

  2. Infuse your bill: Lay your paper bill flat. Sprinkle it with your chosen money-drawing powder. Roll it up as tightly as you can.

  3. Assemble the jar: Carefully place the rolled bill into the jar. Add the honey (or syrup/nectar) until the bill is covered. Add your small gold-colored stones to the jar.

  4. Speak your intention: Hold the jar and say these words. As you do, imagine what you'd do if you had the money you need:

"A pulling force draws things near, Cast a line where wealth is found, Into golden currents, deep and clear, And bring abundance all around!"

  5. Seal and place: Seal the jar. You can keep the jar with you if it's small enough, or keep it on your altar or a windowsill.

3. Home Sanctuary Shield

This is a home safeguarding spell that can be hung by any entrance.

The day after I hung it up, I noticed that 1 smoke detectors in my house needed new batteries, and there was a worn cable in the corner of my garage I'd never even known existed — I was instantly more mindful of small things about my home that needed immediate care. Now there's a jar at every door!

What you will need:

  • Sea salt (or Epsom salts, or rock salt)

  • Crushed eggshells (as an alternative to cascarilla powder)

  • Small iridescent crystals (like labradorite, moonstone, or black tourmaline chips)

  • A gold ribbon, cord, or thread — anything golden that can be wrapped around the jar

Steps:

  1. Mix your powders: Mix your crushed eggshells and sea salt together.

  2. Add your crystals: Drop your small iridescent crystals into the jar.

  3. Layer and seal: Add your salt and crushed eggshell mixture, and fill the jar to the top with more small iridescent crystals. Seal the jar.

  4. Adorn and empower: Wrap the gold ribbon around the jar, and you're done. If you're using a golden chain, I suggest using a piece that once belonged to your mother if available. Mothers are the embodiment of safeguarding, and having that little extra something to represent her, and guard your home, will make this jar even more effective. However, any form of gold you choose will still be potent. When using gold of any kind, it's best to leave it somewhere the sun can touch it at least once a day to charge.

4. Magnet for Fellow Witches

This is a delightful one. Most witches don't walk around in tall dark hats or declare themselves in public. This handy little jar is meant to organically attract positive witches to you so you can widen your circle a bit.

What you will need:

  • A white candle

  • Sweet woodruff (as an alternative to meadowsweet)

  • Fennel seeds or celery leaves (as an alternative to angelica root)

  • Caraway seeds (as an alternative to juniper berries)

  • Lemon balm or skullcap (as an alternative to passionflower)

  • Basil

  • Salt

  • Sugar

  • Your favorite small crystals (to send your energy back to them)

Steps:

  1. Prepare your herbs and stones: If you wish, you can mix these herbs together or layer them, adding your chosen small crystals first.

  2. Assemble with intention: While putting the jar together, light a white candle and think positive thoughts. There aren't any words to say aloud, but in your mind, imagine yourself glowing slightly, giving off good feelings that other witches will be able to notice.

  3. Carry and observe: Carry this jar with you when you travel and be on the lookout for new connections that suddenly appear in your life!

5. Breaking Old Patterns Container

Humans are beings of habit, which makes letting go of old patterns especially hard for us. Some habits are fairly harmless, while others can negatively affect our lives, and changing them is a must. This jar will provide both push and a daily reminder that you're strong enough to overcome what's holding you back from living a better life! This jar can be placed in your home where you will see it often, or carried with you.

What you will need:

  • Clearing incense (like frankincense, sandalwood, or sage as an alternative to dragon's blood incense)

  • Silvervine or valerian root (as an alternative to catnip)

  • Onion powder or fresh chopped onion (as an alternative to dried onion flakes)

  • Purple ribbon

  • A purple candle

Steps:

  1. Infuse with intention: Light your clearing incense while putting this jar together. Focus very hard on how your life will improve once you've made this positive shift.

  2. Assemble the jar: Place the herbs into the jar.

  3. Bind and empower: Tie the purple ribbon around it.

  4. Daily boost: When you're feeling especially unmotivated, drop a little of the mixture into the flame of a purple candle and perform your favorite grounding activity.

6. Secure Journey Charm

Another great jar to give as a gift.

What you will need:

  • Fragrant sand verbena or purple poppy mallow (as an alternative to comfrey)

  • Dandelion or ginger (as an alternative to feverfew)

  • Small red crystals (like garnet, red jasper, or carnelian chips)

  • Small golden-brown crystals (like tiger's eye, bronzite, or sunstone chips)

  • A yellow candle

Steps:

  1. Layer your components: Layer the jar in any order you like, but make sure it's herb, stone, herb, stone.

  2. Speak your intention: Light your yellow candle and say these words while holding the jar:

"Winds and rains, fog and snow, Will never my journeys slow. Safely I'll always arrive, Wherever I choose to thrive!"

  3. Seal and place: Seal the jar with a few drops of the yellow candle wax. Keep it in your car.

7. Intuition Amplifier

This jar is meant to sharpen your inner knowing and help you connect more deeply with your spiritual guidance. It's perfect for those moments when you need clear insights or want to strengthen your psychic senses.

What you will need:

  • A clear or white jar

  • Lavender buds (dried)

  • Mugwort (dried; or dried chamomile, or lemon balm)

  • Clear quartz chips (or selenite, amethyst, or sodalite chips)

  • A small piece of paper

  • A pen

  • A blue candle (or a white candle)

Steps:

  1. Write your aim: On the small piece of paper, write a clear intention for heightened intuition, such as "My inner wisdom is clear" or "I receive divine guidance."

  2. Assemble the jar: Place your chosen small crystals into the bottom of the jar.

  3. Layer the herbs: Add the lavender buds and mugwort (or chosen substitute) on top of the crystals.

  4. Infuse with light: Light the blue candle (or white candle). Hold the jar in your hands and picture a bright, clear light filling the jar, activating the ingredients with your intention.

  5. Seal with wax: Drip a few drops of the melted candle wax onto the herbs to seal your intention.

  6. Place and attune: Keep this jar by your bedside, on your altar, or in a quiet space where you meditate. Before sleep or meditation, hold the jar and focus on your intention.

8. Altar "Essence" Container

This isn't quite a jar spell, but it works in a similar way. You'll need a small metal tin with a sliding top. You can find these online or at stores that sell empty bottles (I got mine at Natural Grocers). This isn't a portable altar meant for spellwork itself. Its purpose is to carry the "spirit" of your altar with you wherever you go. I can't give you a list of exact items because I don't know what you have on your altar or what you use it for, but I took elements from my altar and made them tiny, then sealed them in the tin. This way, you can feel connected to your altar, and its power, even when you're away.

What you will need:

  • A small metal tin with a sliding top.

  • Tiny versions of items from your personal altar (e.g., small crystals, a pinch of your favorite altar herbs, a miniature charm, a tiny dried flower, or a small symbol).

  • Clear sealant or strong glue (optional, if you want to secure items and prevent spilling).

Steps:

  1. Select your miniatures: Look at your main altar. Choose a few small items that represent its key meaning and energy for you. This could be a tiny tumbled stone, a pinch of a common altar herb, a small picture, or a mini charm.

  2. Arrange with care: Carefully place these miniature items into your metal tin. Arrange them in a way that feels meaningful to you.

  3. Seal (optional): If you've included powders or very small loose items, you might want to use a clear sealant or strong glue to keep them from mixing or spilling. This also further 'locks in' the energy.

  4. Infuse with intent: Hold the closed tin in your hands. Close your eyes and visualize the entire energy and presence of your main altar flowing into this small tin. Feel the strong connection.

  5. Carry with you: Carry this "altar essence" container with you (in your left pocket is often said to be best, closer to the heart!). Touch it whenever you wish to feel more connected to your practice or when you need a sense of comfort and power from your sacred space.
